DIAZ TOROAssociate Professor, Restorative Sciences  Department UPR, School of Dental Medicine, Medical Sciences Campus Course Description This course will present an overview of oral and  pharyngeal cancer statistics, incidence and mortality.  Review oral cancer prevention strategies and  general information about oropharyngeal cancer related risk factors will be  discussed.  Emphasis in early detection,  diagnosis and referral of the most common lesions in the oral cavity, new  surgery technologies available in Puerto Rico for the early treatment of  oropharyngeal cancer and the cosmetic and functional results of the treatment  with these technologies will also be presented. Course Objectives
  • Update the basics on  detection of suspicious lesions in the oral cavity and its treatment.
  • Update the concepts of  diagnosis and referral of lesions in the oral cavity.
  • Update the adequate  process to evaluate oral lesions and to appropriately classify them.
  • Update new minimally  invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of oral cancer and how to  properly refer the patient.
  • Encourage the  participant to integrate to the private practice techniques to detect  suspicious oral lesions.
